M UNIVERSITY Of Minnesota CroOKSTON YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO FAR... TO GO FAR! The University of Minnesota Crookston is home to a large population of student athletes and one of those students is freshman Halle Winjum, who will be playing basketball for the Golden Eagles. HOME OF THE GOLDEN EAGLES HALLE WINJUM - Crookston, MN Winjum has deep ties to the community with both her parents being Crookston natives, and her own accomplishments shining bright in local news. During her high school basketball career at Crookston High School, Winjum excelled as an All State Honorable Mention, Northwest Conference MVP, and was All- Northwest Conference as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. She left as a member of the 1,000 point club and set a school record in defensive rebounds in a season. Winjum was also crowned Miss Crookston during the community's local scholarship pageant and was a role model to many throughout her senior year. Winjum, who plans to major in elementary education at U of M Crookston, says her first week living in the residence hall has been memorable. "I love that U of M Crookston is a small campus because you feel comfortable around people since you get to know them so well. Since this is my hometown, I am also looking forward to showing new students on campus all that Crookston has to offer. I hope to be a helpful resource in welcoming new people to the community." JAKE HJELLE East Grand Forks, MN U of M Crookston Golden Eagle baseball alumnus Jake Hjelle 2024 of East Grand Forks, Minn. had an incredible ride as a student athlete earning Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Player of the Year, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Player of the Year, and was named an All-Region and All- America performer. Hjelle contributed to his final season with Crookston earning All-NSIC honors and receiving All-NSIC First Team accolades. Hjelle's family spent nine years watching and following Golden Eagle baseball across the country as his brother, Reed, also played for U of M Crookston and earned similar accolades. "Family Over Everything' was Hjelle's motto, whether that meant his own family or his Golden Eagle baseball family, and the team's growth over the years has shown how a close-knit family can help lead towards victory. Hjelle's success with the Golden Eagles as the most decorated player in program history led to an opportunity after graduation with the Fargo- Moorhead Redhawks of the American Association. Currently, Hjelle is playing baseball for the Ottawa Titans in the Frontier League. "The people there on the Crookston campus always made it feel like home." Halle and Jake are just two examples of regional Golden Eagle student athletes who have learned you don't have to go far from home to receive a world class education and take your talents to new heights.
