Understanding Golf: A Complete Beginner's Guide
If you haven’t ever watched golf on TV, you might think that the sport is overly complex or simply too unexciting to care about. However, while it doesn’t maintain the excitement and thrills of sports like basketball and football, professional golf is still an intense sport with plenty of tension and trick shots to keep you entertained. With a little basic knowledge, you can enjoy watching golf at the sports bar just as much as any other sport. If you’re going to become a golf viewer, here is what you need to know.
Tournaments usually span Thursdays through Sundays.
During the first two days of tournament play, everyone who has joined the tournament plays. Players are typically in groups of three for these rounds, and they play a morning round one day and an afternoon round the other. After these two rounds, the top 75 players move on to play over the weekend. They then go through rounds of eliminations until a winner is determined on Sunday.
Golfers are allowed to carry 14 clubs with them during play.
Golfers are allowed to have a maximum of 14 clubs, but not all of them keep all 14 with them during play. The woods are used for teeing off, which is the initial hit that the golfer makes. The irons are used for getting the ball from wherever it lands after teeing off to the putting green. Putters are only used on the green.
Par is an essential scoring term.
When you watch golf, you’ll hear the commentators having discussions about being over or under par. Par is the number of strokes a golfer is supposed to take to get the ball into the hole. When a player is one stroke under par, it’s referred to as a birdie. Two strokes under par is called an eagle. If a player scores 1 over par, it’s called a bogey.
