Getting Ready for NBA Playoff Season

The first basketball playoffs took place in 1947 with a three-stage tournament. Over the subsequent decades, the league has changed considerably. It can be tough for even a diehard fan to keep up with the constant changes in rules and formats. But in the end, all that really matters is that you get to enjoy watching the game with your buddies at a sports bar that offers great brews and food.

Basics of the NBA Playoffs

If you’re a casual fan, it can’t hurt to brush up on the basics of the NBA playoff before you head off to a sports bar with all your friends. Every year, the best eight teams in the Eastern and Western Conferences go into the playoffs. Each of the teams are seeded one through eight. In round one of the playoffs, the top-seeded team plays the eighth seed. The number two seed plays the number seven seed, and so on. If there’s a tie, the presence of a divisional title can be used to determine the seeding.

Series in the NBA Playoffs

Each series in the NBA playoffs is structured in a “best of seven” format. The team with the home court advantage, which is usually the higher-seeded team, will always host the first, second, fifth, and seventh game of the series. That team will then go on the road for the third, fourth, and sixth game of the series. When there is one winner in the Eastern Conference and one in the West, the two teams will battle each other for the Championship. In recent memory, some of the teams that are most likely to make it far into the playoffs include the Warriors, Cavaliers, Spurs, and Lakers.
