A Crash Course in Ice Hockey Terms and Slang

Every sport has its own unique terminology and slang that becomes familiar to seasoned fans over time. However, if you’re just starting to watch a sport that is new to you, the terminology and slang can be a little overwhelming. Ice hockey in particular has a wealth of odd terms. In order to truly enjoy the sport, you’ll need to learn the lingo.

Backchecking

Backchecking occurs when a player skates back to their defensive zone because the opposing team has the puck. A backchecking player seeks to apply pressure to the opposing team.

Forechecking

When the opposing team has the puck, the other team’s players may skate back to the offensive zone. Here, they seek to recover possession of the puck through forechecking.

Cross -checking

Cross-checking occurs when a player uses the shaft of the hockey stick to check or strike another player. When the stick is the point of contact, it’s known as cross-checking and it’s an illegal play. On the other hand, if the player elbows another player while holding the shaft of the stick, it would be a legal hit because the stick doesn’t make contact.

Biscuit

The biscuit is another word for the hockey puck. Other food-related slang word you might hear are “apple,” which refers to an assist, and “cheese,” which refers to the top shelf on the net. “Lettuce” is hair, an “egg” is a game that ends with a zero-zero score, and “chiclets” are teeth. (Hockey players tend to lose a lot of teeth.)

Cycling

A team that has possession of the puck may engage in cycling while waiting for a good chance to score. Cycling refers to passing the puck from one offensive player to the next using short passes. When a teammate gets into position to take a shot at the goal, the other player will pass the puck to them.
